What Cars Are Made In China

Wondering what cars are made in China, this article shares important insights into everything you need to know about what cars are made in China and the companies that manufacture them.

While some reports note that Americans don’t really care about where their cars are made,  as long the cars are reliable, and the quality of the cars remains consistent, some people don’t hold these beliefs. The truth, however, is that despite what the consumers may or may not believe in, there is a large number of automakers that have now turned their investments from American companies to leading Chinese manufacturing facilities, which have been tested and proven to not just make but also sell the best of Chinese-made cars that have been sold in the US over the past few years.

2018 reports show that China is the world’s leading automotive industry, and though the government might have put in place measures to penalize people who made their cars in China then imported them to the country, there is no denying that China makes the biggest bulk of the cars manufactured in the world.

So, which are some of the cars that are made in China?

The 2019 Buick Envision

This luxury compact crossover car is one of the cars that is now a big thing in most markets of the world, and despite the fact that it was originally meant for the Chinese markets after its introduction in China in 2014, the Buick Envision is a well-built SUV. This car is charged high tariffs in the US, but GM reports that there were at least 41,000 Envisions that were sold in 2017 in the US.

The Buicks are charged a 25% tariff, as is the case with other Chinese-built vehicles, and though this car costs more than most of its rivals, it still is in the hyper-competitive vehicle class.

2018 Cadillac CT6 Plug-in Hybrid

The Cadillac CT6 hybrid car is one of the larger luxury sedans. Although it was made in Michigan initially, this plug-in hybrid is a model that isn’t made in the US but in Shanghai, China, where one of GM’s facilities is based. On the large luxury car ratings, the CT6 is ranked 4th. This hybrid version of the car got into the dealership lot in 2017.

This CT6 features a powerful turbocharged V6 or 4-cylinder engine. This plug-in hybrid doesn’t have a slouch, and it produces a powerful 335 horsepower, along with a full charge that yields power for up to 31 miles of the fully electric range.

In 2017, GM sold at least 10,000 units of the CT6, but only a fraction of these vehicles were plug-in hybrids. Importation of the hybrids, however, stopped early in 2018.

2018 Volvo S60 Inscription

Despite having small legroom in the rear seat, this small luxury car is one of the Chinese-built Volvos. So, while Volvos weren’t traditionally made in China, this Inscription model with a long wheelbase broke the ranks, and it’s regarded as one of the crossover versions alongside the XC60.

2018 Volvo S90

This is the other top-rated China-made car in the US, and like the Inscription Long-wheelbase of the S60, the Volvo S90 is one of the top-rated luxury mid-sized sedans. Like the 2018 Inscription, the S90 is also built in China. Unfortunately, this car has a rather high price base, and with the high 25% tax tariff charged on the car, the S90’s market is rather damaged. The high tariffs would easily see Volvo go back to the European-built standard-wheelbase specific for the US market.

Newer Upcoming Models

Besides the Volvos, Cadillacs, and the Buicks, there are several other cars that are made in China. And even as the automakers reconsider their different strategies about how to deal with the high tariffs, the Chinese auto manufacturers are still forging ahead, coming up with various car models that would allow them to reach and win over their American consumers. One of these companies is Geely, a company that is one of the top-rated manufacturers thanks to their ownership of Volvo.

Brands such as GAC and the FAW Group have also made their announcements for specific vehicles such as the G8 and the Guyon, respectively. There also are plans with brands such as Nio, Byton, and BYD.

The leading car manufacturers now running their operations from China include SAIC Motors, FAW Group, Dongfeng, and Chang’an.

These are just some of the few Chinese car manufacturers. The others include Brilliance Automotive, Geely, Great Wall, Chery, BYD, Beijing Automotive Group, Guangzhou Automotive Group, and JAC (Jianghuai).

Volkswagen Group China is a known manufacturer of Audi and Volkswagen cars

Jaguar Landrovers are also made in China thanks to Jaguar’s joint operations with Chery.

BMW also makes a big percentage of their cars in China, alongside the Chinese partner, the Brilliance Automotive Group Holdings

All Volvo cars are now made in China since Volvo is owned by a Chinese-owned company called Geely. Some of these Volvo cars include the Buick Envision, Cadillac CT6 Plug-in, Volvo S90, and the Ford Focus Active, among others.
